Italy has one of Europe's best intercity rail networks. The high-speed trains (Frecciarossa, Italo) are fast, comfortable and often cheaper than flying when booked in advance. Here is everything you need to know.
The Two Operators
Trenitalia (trenitalia.com): the state railway. Operates everything from the Frecciarossa high-speed to regional trains. Booking through the app or website.
Italo (italotreno.it): private high-speed competitor on the main Milan-Rome-Naples axis. Often slightly cheaper than Trenitalia for the same route, especially if you book 30+ days ahead. Loyalty program (Italo Piรน) gives discounts after a few journeys.
Key rule: always compare both before booking. The difference can be โฌ20-40 on the same route.
High-Speed Routes and Times
| Route | High-speed time | Price range |
|---|---|---|
| Milan โ Rome | 2h 55min | โฌ29-99 |
| Rome โ Naples | 1h 10min | โฌ19-59 |
| Milan โ Florence | 1h 45min | โฌ19-59 |
| Florence โ Rome | 1h 30min | โฌ19-59 |
| Venice โ Milan | 2h 20min | โฌ24-69 |
| Naples โ Bari | 3h 30min | โฌ29-49 |
How to Book and Save Money
Book early: the cheapest "Base" and "Economy" fares are non-refundable and sell out fast. For July-August, book 60+ days ahead. Other months, 2-4 weeks is usually fine.
Use the apps: both Trenitalia and Italo have apps that work well. Tickets are on your phone โ no printing needed.
Avoid peak hours: trains on Friday evening (northbound) and Sunday evening (southbound) are the most expensive and most crowded.
Trenitalia's "Carnet" gives you 10 trips for the price of 8-9 on high-speed routes. If you're travelling Italy for 2+ weeks with multiple train journeys, this saves significant money. Available on trenitalia.com.
Regional Trains: The Hidden Italy
Not everything in Italy is on the high-speed network. Regional trains (Regionale, Regionale Veloce) connect smaller towns and cost almost nothing โ โฌ5-12 for most journeys. No booking required: just validate your ticket before boarding.
Essential regional routes:
- Cinque Terre: the 5 towns are connected by regional train only (La Spezia โ Levanto, โฌ5)
- Dolomites base: Bolzano โ Merano, Bolzano โ Bressanone (โฌ4-8)
- Tuscany wine country: Siena โ Chiusi, Florence โ Siena (โฌ10)
- Puglia interior: Bari โ Alberobello via FSE railway (โฌ4)
Eurail Pass: Worth It?
For most Italy-focused trips: no. The Eurail Italy pass costs โฌ200+ for 3 days of travel and still requires reservations on high-speed trains (โฌ10-13 per train). If you're visiting Italy and 2-3 other countries, a global pass might make sense. For Italy only, point-to-point tickets bought early are almost always cheaper.
