Cities cost significantly more than smaller towns. Venice and Florence are the most expensive. Naples, Palermo and the south are 30-40% cheaper than Rome for the same quality of accommodation and food.
Free Things to Do in Italy
Churches: Italy's churches are among the finest art galleries in the world — and almost all are free. Santa Maria Maggiore (Rome), Santa Croce (Florence), San Zeno (Verona) contain masterworks that would headline any paid museum. The rule: churches are free, crypts and sacristies sometimes charge €2-5.
Free museum days: The first Sunday of every month, all Italian state museums are free. This includes the Colosseum, the Uffizi, Pompeii, the Borghese Gallery and the Vatican Museums. Plan around this — queues are long but it's worth it for major sites.
Street food: Naples has the best budget food in Italy. A pizza fritta (fried pizza) costs €2. A cuoppo of mixed fried food costs €3. Eating on the street is not just acceptable but traditional in Naples.
Historic centres: Walking through Rome, Florence, Venice, Lecce, Matera, Bologna — all free. Italy's urban fabric is itself the greatest free museum in the world.
Budget Transport
Regional trains: Trenitalia regional trains (marked R or RV) are cheap: Florence-Siena €9, Rome-Orvieto €10, Naples-Pompeii €3.20. Always validate your ticket before boarding.
FlixBus: Long-distance buses between major cities are often €5-15 — significantly cheaper than high-speed trains. Slower but fine for overnight or flexible travel.
Avoid high-speed trains last-minute: A Rome-Milan Frecciarossa bought 5 minutes before departure costs €80-100. The same ticket bought 3 weeks ahead is €19-29.
Budget Accommodation Tips
- Stay in smaller towns and day-trip to major cities — a B&B in Orvieto costs €60-80 and you can day-trip to Rome (1h15 by train)
- Agriturismi (farm stays) outside cities often include breakfast and cost less than city hotels
- Avoid Venice accommodation — stay in Mestre on the mainland (€50-80/night vs €200+ in Venice) and take the 10-minute train
- Book 4-6 weeks ahead for summer, 1-2 weeks is fine for autumn and spring
