Italy in July is magnificent and brutal in equal measure. The heat, the crowds and the prices peak simultaneously. The secret is knowing where to go โ and where to avoid.
Where to Go in July
The Dolomites are Italy's best July destination โ temperatures of 18-24ยฐC, the full hiking season in bloom, and landscapes that make you understand why they're UNESCO-listed. Base yourself in Bolzano, Cortina or Ortisei.
Lake Como and Lake Maggiore are warm enough to swim (23-25ยฐC water) but cooled by mountain breezes. Arrive by 9am for popular spots like Bellagio and Varenna before the day-trippers from Milan flood in.
Puglia is hot (32-36ยฐC) but has a coastal breeze that makes it tolerable. Lecce, Alberobello and the Salento coast are spectacular in July โ and cheaper than Amalfi or Positano.
Sardinia is peak season and peak price in July. Go in June or September instead unless you've booked 6 months ahead.
What to Avoid in July
Rome and Florence are 38-40ยฐC heat traps in July, with streets so crowded museums feel like rush-hour metro. Go in October instead. If you must visit, arrive at every museum at opening time and return to your hotel 12-4pm.
Amalfi Coast: the SS163 road is a two-hour traffic jam every afternoon in July. The beaches are packed. The prices are extreme. Beautiful in May or September โ avoid in July.
Venice has a daily visitor limit in summer (โฌ5 entry fee from 2024). Still extremely crowded and hot. Book accommodation months ahead if you must go.
July Practical Tips
- Book all accommodation 3-4 months ahead for July โ nothing is spontaneous
- Travel early: be at sites before 9am, retreat indoors 12-4pm
- Avoid driving the Amalfi Coast, Cinque Terre and Lake Como roads in July โ use ferries and trains
- Ferragosto (August 15) approaches: some restaurants and shops close for the week before and after
The hill towns of central Italy (Orvieto, Spoleto, Todi, Urbino) stay 5-8ยฐC cooler than the coast in July, have almost no crowds compared to Tuscany, and are stunning. Completely underrated for summer.
