Italy's Christmas markets are among the most beautiful in Europe โ and the least touristy compared to their Austrian and German counterparts. December is cold, yes, but it's also magical: mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, nativity scenes, and city lights in the quiet streets of medieval towns.
The Best Christmas Markets in Italy
Bolzano (Bozen) โ Italy's finest Christmas market, hands down. The South Tyrol capital runs its market from late November through January 6, and it genuinely rivals Innsbruck and Vienna. The old town square fills with wooden stalls, vin brulรฉ (mulled wine), speck and strudel. The Germanic culture of Alto Adige makes it feel authentically Central European.
Trento โ Just 60km south of Bolzano, Trento has a magnificent market in Piazza Fiera with artisan crafts and local mountain food. Often overlooked in favour of Bolzano but equally beautiful and much less crowded.
Turin โ Italy's chocolate capital goes all out at Christmas. The Luci d'Artista light installations (artist-designed Christmas lights) transform the baroque city into something extraordinary. The indoor Mercato di Natale at the Palavela is massive.
Merano โ The most elegant market in Italy, set in the thermal spa town's pedestrianised centre with the Alps as backdrop. Merano feels like a film set at Christmas.
Rome โ Piazza Navona's Christmas market is touristy but spectacular. The nativity scene and funfair rides are part of the tradition. Combine with a winter visit to the Vatican Museums (much shorter queues in December).
Florence โ The German Christmas market in Piazza Santa Croce is a winter institution. Real German stallholders bring authentic products. Combine with the Uffizi (30-minute queues instead of 3 hours in summer).
December Travel Tips for Italy
- December 8 (Immaculate Conception) is a national holiday โ everything closes, crowds gather for Christmas tree lighting ceremonies
- December 24-26: restaurants and museums may close, check ahead
- December is low season everywhere except ski resorts โ hotels in Rome and Florence are 40-50% cheaper than August
- Christmas Eve (La Vigilia) is the most important meal of the Italian year โ if you know locals, getting invited is the ultimate Italian experience
Visit the Vatican Museums on December 26 (Santo Stefano). Italians are at home digesting lunch, international tourists haven't arrived yet, and the museums are at perhaps 20% capacity. The Sistine Chapel with 50 people in it instead of 500 is a completely different experience.
