The Dolomites are UNESCO-listed for good reason: these pink limestone peaks are unlike any other mountains on earth. A road trip is the best way to experience them โ€” the passes (passo) between valleys are as spectacular as the destinations.

Day 1: Bolzano โ†’ Alpe di Siusi

Start in Bolzano (best train connections from Verona or Innsbruck). Drive up to the Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm) โ€” Europe's largest high-altitude meadow at 1,800m. Cars are restricted in summer (take the cable car from Siusi). Walk the Panorama Trail for sunset views over the Sassolungo massif. Stay in Castelrotto below.

๐Ÿ’ก Booking essential

Dolomites accommodation books out months in advance for July-August. Either book 3-4 months ahead or travel in June or September for far better availability and lower prices.

Day 2: Passo Gardena โ†’ Val Badia

Drive the Passo Gardena (2,121m) โ€” one of the most dramatic road passes in Europe, with the Sella massif towering on all sides. Stop at the Passo Sella viewpoint. Descend into Val Badia and visit the Ladin Cultural Museum in San Martino in Badia. Evening in Corvara, the valley's main village.

Day 3: Tre Cime di Lavaredo

The Tre Cime di Lavaredo are the Dolomites' most iconic sight. Drive to the Auronzo hut (parking fee โ‚ฌ30 in summer โ€” arrive before 8am or after 5pm). The circular walk around the three peaks (10km, 3 hours, easy) gives you every angle of these extraordinary spires. Best light: early morning from the east, late afternoon from the west.

Day 4: Cortina d'Ampezzo

Cortina is Italy's most glamorous mountain resort โ€” expensive, beautiful, and worth an afternoon even if you can't afford to stay. The cable car to the Ra Valles viewpoint (โ‚ฌ20 return) gives views over the Ampezzo basin. Walk the old WWI trenches on the Cinque Torri (15 min drive from Cortina).

Day 5: Passo Falzarego โ†’ Lago di Braies

Drive the Passo Falzarego (2,105m) โ€” scene of fierce WWI fighting, with preserved trenches and a cable car to the summit. Then Lago di Braies (Pragser Wildsee): the most beautiful lake in the Dolomites, with emerald water and vertical rock walls. Arrive before 9am โ€” the car park fills by 10am in peak season. The 3km walk around the lake is flat and unmissable.
