Bergamo Alta (47 min, โฌ5.50) โ The upper town enclosed by Venetian walls is one of Italy's most underrated historic centres. Take the funicular from Bergamo Centrale. Piazza Vecchia, Colleoni Chapel and Romanesque Basilica are extraordinary. Almost no tourists compared to Lake Como.
Lake Como โ Varenna (1h15, โฌ12) โ Direct train to Varenna-Esino. Walk the waterfront, visit Castello di Vezio (20 min hike), take the ferry to Bellagio for lunch. Return by evening.
Mantova (45 min from Brescia, total 1h30, โฌ12) โ Gonzaga Renaissance city on three lakes, largely unknown to international tourists. The Palazzo Ducale and Palazzo Te are extraordinary. Try tortelli di zucca (pumpkin pasta).
Turin (57 min by Frecciarossa, โฌ19-29) โ Italy's most underrated city: Egyptian Museum (second after Cairo), Mole Antonelliana, Porta Palazzo market, best chocolate and coffee culture in Italy.
Lake Maggiore โ Stresa (1h, โฌ12) โ Ferry to the Isole Borromee: Isola Bella has the most extravagant baroque palace in northern Italy.
Verona (1h05 by Frecciarossa, โฌ19-29) โ Roman Arena, Castelvecchio, Piazza delle Erbe, best-value restaurants in northern Italy.
Slightly Further (1h30 โ 2h)
Cinque Terre (2h to La Spezia + regional train, โฌ25-35) โ Take the 7am train, arrive by 9:30am, explore 2-3 villages, ferry between them, return by 7pm. Very long but doable.
Cremona (1h, โฌ8) โ The violin capital of the world: Stradivari museums, Gothic cathedral, the finest torrone (nougat) in Italy. Almost no foreign tourists.
