Milan is the best-connected city in northern Italy โ€” within 30 minutes to 2 hours you can reach Swiss Alps, Renaissance art towns, the most beautiful lakes in Europe, Ligurian coast and UNESCO villages.

By Train (30 min โ€“ 1h30)

Bergamo Alta (47 min, โ‚ฌ5.50) โ€” The upper town enclosed by Venetian walls is one of Italy's most underrated historic centres. Take the funicular from Bergamo Centrale. Piazza Vecchia, Colleoni Chapel and Romanesque Basilica are extraordinary. Almost no tourists compared to Lake Como.

Lake Como โ€” Varenna (1h15, โ‚ฌ12) โ€” Direct train to Varenna-Esino. Walk the waterfront, visit Castello di Vezio (20 min hike), take the ferry to Bellagio for lunch. Return by evening.

Mantova (45 min from Brescia, total 1h30, โ‚ฌ12) โ€” Gonzaga Renaissance city on three lakes, largely unknown to international tourists. The Palazzo Ducale and Palazzo Te are extraordinary. Try tortelli di zucca (pumpkin pasta).

Turin (57 min by Frecciarossa, โ‚ฌ19-29) โ€” Italy's most underrated city: Egyptian Museum (second after Cairo), Mole Antonelliana, Porta Palazzo market, best chocolate and coffee culture in Italy.

Lake Maggiore โ€” Stresa (1h, โ‚ฌ12) โ€” Ferry to the Isole Borromee: Isola Bella has the most extravagant baroque palace in northern Italy.

Verona (1h05 by Frecciarossa, โ‚ฌ19-29) โ€” Roman Arena, Castelvecchio, Piazza delle Erbe, best-value restaurants in northern Italy.

Slightly Further (1h30 โ€“ 2h)

Cinque Terre (2h to La Spezia + regional train, โ‚ฌ25-35) โ€” Take the 7am train, arrive by 9:30am, explore 2-3 villages, ferry between them, return by 7pm. Very long but doable.

Cremona (1h, โ‚ฌ8) โ€” The violin capital of the world: Stradivari museums, Gothic cathedral, the finest torrone (nougat) in Italy. Almost no foreign tourists.
